ADHD
Medical cannabis can offer potential benefits for managing ADHD by improving focus, reducing hyperactivity, and alleviating associated anxiety and stress.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder affecting concentration and behaviour. It can begin in childhood, but it also affects an estimated 3-4% of UK adults. There are two types of ADHD; inattentive, which causes focus issues, and hyperactive, which causes hyperactivity and impulsive behaviours. For adults, symptoms can negatively impact work, relationships and other areas of life.
Symptoms
Symptoms of inattentive ADHD may include difficulty focusing, staying organised or dealing with stress. Hyperactive ADHD may cause restlessness and risk-taking behaviours.
Treatments
ADHD symptoms can be managed with personalised treatments, including therapy and/or medications like methylphenidate or lisdexamfetamine.
Research suggests CBD can also be beneficial in treating ADHD; a 2020 study of adults with ADHD using a specific dose of medical cannabis took fewer other ADHD medications, and a 2023 study on medical cannabis use for ADHD saw improvements in sleep quality and anxiety.
