Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

Medical cannabis for MS (multiple sclerosis) may help by reducing muscle spasticity, easing chronic pain, and supporting better sleep quality.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) affects around 150,000 people in the UK. It occurs when the immune system becomes overactive, mistakenly attacking protective cells in the brain and spinal cord. This is known as demyelination, and it causes issues with the brain’s ability to send signals to other parts of the body, leading to symptoms like fatigue, vision problems, numbness, clumsiness and muscle cramps.

Symptoms

MS symptoms vary, but some of the most common include extreme fatigue, vision problems (such as blurred vision or eye pain), numbness, tingling, dizziness, clumsiness, and muscle cramps or spasms.

Treatments

MS can’t be cured, but treatments can manage symptoms and, if possible, maintain a state of remission. These include medications to improve nerve function, therapies to reduce relapse frequency, muscle relaxants, pain relief, physiotherapy and talking therapies. Medical cannabis could have positive effects on symptoms like insomnia, pain and muscle cramps/spasms, resulting in the reduction or discontinuation of medications for MS symptoms.
