Complex Regional Pain Syndrome
Medical cannabis can provide a natural solution in managing severe pain and symptoms of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, offering hope for improved quality of life.
Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a type of chronic pain which can be debilitating. Usually, CRPS will affect one limb; however it can also spread elsewhere in the body. Most cases are triggered by an injury, but with CRPS, the subsequent pain from that injury stretches beyond the typical duration and severity that would be expected. The cause of this is unknown.
Symptoms
The main symptom of CRPS is pain, which occurs in the arm in 60% of cases. Other symptoms include extremely sensitive skin, swelling, stiffness, numbness or tingling sensations in the affected limb.
Treatments
Generally, CRPS gradually improves over time but treatment is needed to manage symptoms that could persist for years. Recommendations may include over-the-counter pain medications, prescription anticonvulsants or antidepressants, physiotherapy, or talking therapies to address the emotional impact. A 2022 study found medical cannabis was effective in treating CRPS, and a 2023 study highlighted positive impacts on sleep and mood.

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a challenging and often debilitating condition that affects not only pain levels but also sleep, mobility, and overall function.
The constant pain, swelling, and sensitivity associated with CRPS can disrupt daily life, including rest and rehabilitation efforts.
Medical cannabis offers hope by addressing multiple aspects of CRPS. It can help manage severe pain, reduce inflammation, and improve sleep quality, allowing patients to rest more effectively.
Additionally, by alleviating pain and promoting relaxation, it can support rehabilitation efforts, helping patients regain movement and function.
At Emerald, our expert team works with you to develop a personalised treatment plan that incorporates medical cannabis to address pain, improve sleep, and support rehabilitation, all aimed at improving your overall quality of life.
