Fibromyalgia

Medical cannabis can help provide patients with natural relief of the widespread pain and fatigue associated with fibromyalgia, contributing to improved daily well-being.

Fibromyalgia, or fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), is a long-term condition causing pain throughout the body. An estimated 1 in 20 people are thought to experience it in some form. Research suggests this happens due to changes in the central nervous system, but the exact cause is unknown. Some people can develop fibromyalgia after a physical injury, infection, or emotional distress.

Symptoms

Symptoms may be consistent or intermittent, and can include widespread pain around the body, increased sensitivity to pain, muscle stiffness, sleep issues, brain fog, headaches, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and low mood.

Treatments

No cure has been found for fibromyalgia to date, but lifestyle changes, talking therapies such as cognitive behavioural therapy, as well as medications, can help to manage symptoms. Opioid medications are not regarded as a long term option, but medical cannabis can offer a natural alternative; a 2020 study found patients may have a more favourable response to alternative pain relief like cannabis when treating fibromyalgia.
