What is Cannabigerol (CBG)?

Cannabigerol, or CBG, is one of more than 100 cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. There isn’t much in each plant, with some samples containing just 20% CBG content. CBG is similar to CBD in that its non-psychoactive nature means anyone who takes it will not feel the sensation of being high. It also has a unique chemical structure, making it more challenging to extract than other types. It’s often put into products like cannabis oils, concentrates or edible CBG products.

CBG is regularly referred to as the “mother of all cannabinoids” for its ability to produce many other cannabinoids like CBD and THC. It also has potential significance in medical cannabis too, with studies suggesting it may have antibiotic, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties, and could help with conditions like depression, Parkinson’s disease or chronic pain.

In fact, a recent survey on CBG product users found that 51% of users did so to treat anxiety. Similarly, 41% of users did so to manage chronic pain, and felt it improved their symptoms.

Is Cannabigerol (CBG) legal in the UK?

CBG itself is not considered to be a controlled substance, so as long as CBG products don’t exceed 1mg of THC in their final preparation, they are legal in the UK. From 2018 onwards, medical cannabis was legalised for those with a medical reason and a prescription from a specialist doctor.
