What is Hexahydrocannabinol (HHC)?

Hexahydrocannabinol, or HHC, is a semi-synthetic cannabinoid created in a laboratory. It’s made using cannabidiol (which you might know as CBD) that is extracted from a type of low-THC cannabis called hemp. For the most part, the structure of HHC is chemically comparable to THC, but contains more hydrogen.

This cannabinoid was first created in 1944 by American chemist Roger Adams, and most pharmacological studies on it were done during the first half of the 20th century. These included in vitro studies, meaning they were done in something like a test tube or a Petri dish, and in vivo studies, meaning they were done on a living organism such as an animal.

In recent years, more research has been done on the effects of HHC on the human body. Findings suggest that it could produce similar effects on the central nervous system to that of other cannabinoids, but may have a lower potency than some forms of THC.

Is HHC legal?

HHC is categorised as a semi-synthetic cannabinoid (SSC). In the UK, this means that if HHC is obtained without an official prescription or produced without a license, it is considered a controlled substance classified by the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2010.
