What is Resin?

In the context of cannabis, resin refers to a sticky substance secreted by something called trichomes in the cannabis plant. Trichomes are the glands that appear on the surface of the flowers and leaves of mature female cannabis plants, and they have several functions; temperature regulation, photosynthesis, pest deterrent, and more. They can be smoked, inhaled or consumed as an edible, and they’re responsible for the medicinal and psychoactive properties of the cannabis plant.

Resin can be used for a number of things, and since cannabis resin is rich in over 150 different types of terpenes, the unique features of each type influence the medicinal properties and psychoactive characteristics of various forms of cannabis. It’s why you may hear about different ‘strains’ of cannabis.

The most predominant cannabinoids used for either medicine or recreation include tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD).

Is Cannabis Resin legal?

Under the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2010, cannabis resin is a controlled substance, and therefore it is illegal in the UK. From 2018, medical cannabis became legal with a prescription from specialist doctors due to a specific medical need.
