rosin extract

What is Rosin Extract?

Rosin extract is a highly pure extract from the cannabis plant that’s characterised by its extraction method. Cannabis concentrates can be made using one of four methods; dry, water-based, CO2-based and solvent-based. Solvent-based methods tend to have a higher potency (an average of 52.2-80% THC) than cannabis flowers (an average of 12% THC), but a method that results in a lower potency could be more beneficial for medical purposes depending on the condition being treated.

Rosins are thought to be one of the most versatile cannabis concentrates. This processing method can dissolve trichomes–tiny hair-like structures on the plant’s surface containing cannabinoids like THC and CBD–without solvents like butane, hexane or ethanol. Instead, rosin extract is made by applying constant pressure and heating the cannabis flower to a moderate temperature to remove the terpene-rich resin and maintain a natural extract.

Is Rosin Extract legal?

THC is the psychoactive part of the cannabis plant that causes the feeling of being high, and it’s illegal in the UK under the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2010. Cannabis products are legal unless they contain more than 1mg of THC in their final preparation, and typically rosin extract contains a high level of THC, meaning it’s likely to exceed the legal limit.

In 2018, medical cannabis became legal with a prescription from a specialist doctor, so rosin extract can be used legally if there is medical need.
